If you're familiar with JIRA you probably know it was originally conceived to give software developers the tools to collaboratively create better software. And although JIRA can be used for tracking other types of work, the most popular use case remains tracking software projects.

I am not a software developer, but I use JIRA to track our training development projects. We will set up a project for each new course (eLearning or classroom) that needs to be developed and create issues for each major task that needs to be accomplished.

I started using JIRA just a few months ago, and I am now at the point in my learning curve at which I understand how JIRA is designed to help me manage projects more effectively, which is to say, I know the basics. But when I watch our consultants and developers use it, I see things that are beyond comprehension. It shows me how little I know and, more importantly, how much more I have to learn.

The Tipping Point of Learning Software

It is often this way when learning new software. It is fairly easy to get the basics, but it takes time, effort, and lots of experimenting to learn the “real stuff” that software can do. I want to learn more of that JIRA functionality to be more effective in my work. One way (among many) to do this is to take shorter, targeted tutorials.

A lot of us are like this. We get to a point where we just need to learn little tasks in small bits to advance our skills. In this spirit, we created our first, short tutorial called Using JIRA Effectively. It is 9 minutes long and shows you those little tasks that greatly improve how you use JIRA, like creating and sharing issue searches, pulling people into issues, and monitoring work activity.

If you are like me, you know JIRA basics, and you know that learning more will greatly increase your productivity, then you will get a lot out of this tutorial. And because you are like me, I will give it to you for free.
